The Lab

What is The Lab?

At The Lab, ComNet16 attendees have the chance to meet one-on-one with companies who are transforming the way we communicate for an interactive lesson on how their game-changing products and tools combined with a powerful vision can change the way we see the world.

Unlike many conference exhibition spaces, The Lab is structured around appointments.

These meetings will empower you to learn how to use (or better use) a communications product or program, while establishing a valuable professional connection. This is a great opportunity for future partnerships or collaborations. Scroll down to sign up for a meeting at The Lab!

Nolan Haims Creative

Nolan Haims Creative

Why should you meet with us?

Many organizations spend hours each day using PowerPoint and Excel to communicate their most important messages, and yet the vast majority of people have had zero training in these tools and how to effectively present using them. Learn how just a few hours of training can completely transform your approach, your use of these tools and your communications.

What can we offer you?

As principal of the firm, Nolan Haims has over 20 years in visual communications. He has created keynotes for Fortune 500 CEOs, TED Talks, sales upfronts for all the major television networks and countless board and other presentation for non-profits and foundations large and small. He is one of only 11 people designated by Microsoft as PowerPoint MVP and as such consults regularly with Microsoft development teams. He is an industry leader and expert in presentation and PowerPoint.

What questions can we help you answer?

  • How can I communicate my data more effectively using only Microsoft tools?
  • My board of directors tells me we present too much information to them on screen; how can I design better slides for them?
  • My board of directors wants printed presentations, but we don’t have InDesign capabilities; how can we give them something professional-looking using PowerPoint?
  • We spend way too much time reinventing the wheel and struggling with design in PowerPoint every time we create a presentation; how can we spend less time here and more doing our real jobs?
  • Where can we source professional imagery and graphics from?

About us

Nolan Haims Creative is a boutique visual communications firm. We specialize in presentation design, data visualization and traditional print graphic design. Half of our work is design and half is training organizations to be better visual communicators.

Ben and Erin have thrived under the highest pressure of White House communications – and they now help nonprofits succeed in their own missions through winning messaging and media campaigns.

What can we offer you?

Want to improve your writing? Connect better with your audiences? Deal more successfully with the press – friendly or otherwise? Come make a connection with Ben Feller and Erin Pelton of Mercury. In their respective roles as a former chief White House correspondent and as a former communications director at the White House and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Ben and Erin are ready to get the conversation started!

What questions can we help you answer?

  • How can I craft a compelling narrative?
  • Turn jargon into plain English?
  • Get people to care about the story of my organization?
  • Hook the media?
  • Or reach those audiences we can never seem to reach?

Come find out.

VIOOLY

VIOOLY

Why should you meet with us?

Book a slot with us at The Lab to learn how VIOOLY works and give it a test run. Bring your own demo copy and VIOOLY will show you if something in your writing may be keeping someone from understanding the impact of your work. You’ll get results in real-time and will learn a few techniques that can help make your writing more impactful. VIOOLY is now available to all nonprofit organizations.

What can we offer you?

We know writing is an art, but research and science can inform the process. For the past four years, we have partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the broader global development sector to develop an online communications tool—VIOOLY—that improves the way they talk about their work. Last year at The Lab, we showed the beta tool to several organizations. Now after successful beta testing and a rigorous pilot session, VIOOLY is available for use by all organizations in the nonprofit sector. Results from the pilot were overwhelming positive: - 100% of all organizations that used VIOOLY during the 6-month pilot agreed the tool “helped improve the effectiveness of their communications in generating support for their work.” - 100% of all organizations that participated in the pilot reported that they would want to continue using the tool after the pilot. VIOOLY has helped the global development field improve the way they talk about their work. We are excited to be back in The Lab at ComNet16 to show how VIOOLY can benefit other fields and your organization too.

What questions can we help you answer?

  • Do you want to see what your audience sees when they read your “About Us” statement on your website?
  • Are you constantly trying to relieve tension between your research, policy or program teams when it comes to communications?
  • Do you want to know how, in just 10 minutes of editing, you can make stronger connections with your audiences and empower them to take action in support of your work?

A pilot user from The ONE Campaign said VIOOLY “helped show colleagues how their initial drafts scored and how my edits improved the scores across all the indicators. This helped remove tension and made the negotiations more objective and less about personal writing styles.”

What can we offer you?

We build websites for nonprofits and other social good organizations – but that means we have a vested interest in everything else surrounding the moment of launch. We have expertise in everything from how to capture email addresses to effective long-term follow-up to modeling the (chutes and) ladders of engagement.

What questions can we help you answer?

  • Want to understand what your analytics are telling you?
  • Curious about how best to tell your story online?
  • Wondering if it's worth it to integrate your CRM with your website?
  • Interested in the latest open source fundraising solutions?
  • Hoping to discuss how content strategy should relate to organizational strategy?
  • Looking for someone to talk to about what can help make a technology project successful?

If it relates to online strategy, odds are we have opinions we'd love to share.

About us

At ThinkShout, we craft compelling open source solutions in partnership with forward-thinking clients like the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Humane Society of the United States. Since our founding in 2011, our focus has been on building a company that is generous to its staff, its clients, and the community.
